Hot Drinks, Cold Days: Bush-Style Recipes to Warm You Up

There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about sipping on a hot drink while wrapped in a blanket, listening to the crackle of the fire and the gentle hum of nature all around you. At Mount Amanzi, winter days are meant for slowing down, savouring the quiet, and warming up from the inside out — preferably with a steaming mug of something delicious in hand.

Whether you’re relaxing on your chalet stoep or gathered around a firepit with friends and family, these bush-style hot drink recipes are perfect for cold days and cosy nights. From comforting classics to creative twists with local flair, here are some of our favourite recipes to try on your next winter getaway.

1. Rooibos & Honey Latte – The Bushveld Hug in a Mug

Rooibos is proudly South African, naturally caffeine-free and packed with antioxidants. This creamy latte version is smooth, soothing, and ideal for late afternoons in the bush.

You’ll need:

  • 2 rooibos tea bags
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • ½ cup warm milk (dairy or plant-based)
  • 1 tsp honey (or to taste)
  • Dash of cinnamon (optional)

Method:

  1. Steep the rooibos tea in boiling water for 5 minutes.
  2. Remove the tea bags and stir in the honey.
  3. Froth or gently heat the milk, then pour over the tea.
  4. Sprinkle with cinnamon and serve hot.

Bush tip: Add a splash of vanilla essence or a drop of almond extract for an extra layer of flavour.

2. Spiced Hot Chocolate with a Hint of Amarula

Nothing beats hot chocolate by the fire — unless you’ve added a splash of Amarula to it. This grown-up version brings a little indulgence to your winter escape.

You’ll need:

  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1½ tbsp sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tot Amarula (optional but highly recommended)
  • Whipped cream or marshmallows (optional for topping)

Method:

  1. In a small pot, mix cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and cinnamon.
  2. Add a splash of milk and stir to form a paste.
  3. Slowly add the rest of the milk and heat gently while stirring.
  4. Once hot, remove from heat and stir in the Amarula.
  5. Serve with whipped cream or marshmallows if you like.

Bush tip: Want a spicier kick? Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a drop of chilli oil.

3. Classic Glühwein – With a Local Twist

Glühwein (or mulled wine) is a winter staple in many parts of the world, and with a few local ingredients, it becomes the perfect bushveld drink to share.

You’ll need:

  • 1 bottle red wine (dry or semi-sweet)
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 2–3 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise (optional)
  • ¼ cup brown sugar or honey
  • ½ tot brandy or Cape Velvet (optional)

Method:

  1. In a large pot, combine all ingredients.
  2. Heat slowly over low heat — don’t boil!
  3. Let it simmer gently for 20–30 minutes.
  4. Remove the spices and orange slices before serving warm in mugs.

Bush tip: Replace the red wine with grape juice for a non-alcoholic version that’s just as comforting.

Whether you’re in the mood for something spicy, creamy, boozy or bold, there’s a hot drink to suit every winter moment. Try one (or all) of these recipes the next time you visit — and don’t forget to bring along your favourite mug.
